It almost seems as if it's an essential feature for browsing HN in a sane way. Naw, everyone replying to the top comment in a post in order to be seen is probably fine.

This one is better than (http://hckrnews.com/about.html#extensions), because after collapsed, the horizontal position doesn't shift. Haven't tried the OP's though.
